Zune Out Sells iPod During First 14 Months
Comparative Launch Sales Has Zune On Top
While I am not convinced that the Microsoft Zune is better multimedia device than the iPod, it is interesting that during the first 14 months of each devices existence, the Zune out sold the iPod by almost 40%. According to Microsoft, they have sold one million Zunes over the last 14 months. Comparatively, Apple only sold 600,000 iPods in it’s first 14 months on the market.
Why Such a Drastic Difference?
I am going to argue that it is do to a fundamental shift in the market. When the iPod first came to market, there was not the type of demand or awareness for MP3 and video players that there is today. In many respects, the iPod made the recent success of the Zune possible, by expanding the overall exposure and marketplace for MP3 Players.
It remains to be seen wether or not the Zune continues to sell at such a feverish pace, or as some speculate, if the Zune is even getting into the hands of the consumer, but in any event, the numbers are impressive, and can only serve to continue to push Apple to be more innovative with their future offering, which will benefit us all.
